Must see in Indore

Known as the ‘Food Capital of India’, Indore is credited with being the largest city in the state of Madhya Pradesh. A hub in the region, the city is growing in the fields of education, trade, business, fashion and media among an array of other industries. Indore has been significantly influenced by the Maratha Empire, under whose reign it came in around the 18th century. The city has since grown into one of unique character. 1.       Bagh Caves
About 150kms from the city of Indore is a group of nine rock-cut monuments known by the name of Bagh Caves.  Dated back to the 5th century, this fine example of Indian rock-cut architecture comprises stunning mural paintings that are inspired by the teachings of Buddhism. Till date, only five of the nine caves exist, with Cave 4 generally regarded as the most popular. It is also known by the name of Rang Mahal or Palace of Colours.



2.       Patal Pani
Nature lovers in Indore can head to the Patal Pani waterfalls for a sight so delightful, it will be difficult to forget. Located at 36kms from Indore, Patal Pani is a cascading waterfall that drops down a staggering 300 feet! Legend has it that the pit goes as far below as hell and hence the name. A great place for a day excursion with family and friends, these waterfalls are at their peak just after monsoon.

3.       Omkareshwar
The Omkareshwar Temple is a place of worship dedicated to Lord Shiva. As one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines, this temple is greatly revered by worshippers from all across the globe. Located on an island that is believed to be in the shape of ‘Om’, this temple is built on the confluence of the holy Narmada and Kaveri Rivers. There are several mythological stories associated with the temple and it thus, qualifies for a visit.



4.       Mandu
A town of historical relevance, Mandu stands at an elevation of 2080ft atop the Vindhya Ranges. Believed to be inhabited since 555AD, this town was then known as Shadibad or the ‘city of happiness’. On account of its location and natural ambience, the town was developed as a military outpost that was used across  eras and dynasties. Several forts, palaces and places of worship adorn this town with their exquisite and intricate architecture.

5.       Rajwada
A seven storied palace built by the Holkars of the Maratha Empire stands as a landmark in the city of Indore. Built in two structures – one of which occupies the heart of the city and the other that is located in the Old City, this palace amalgamates architectural designs of the Mughals, Marathas and the French. The lower levels of the palace are built in stone while the higher stories are made of wood. It boasts incredibly beautiful gardens and waterfalls.
